On 1st April 2016 the new Self-build and Custom Housebuilding Act 2015 came into force (this is not an April fool!). This new law requires local authorities to keep a register of individuals and associations of individuals who are seeking to acquire serviced plots of land in the authority’s area for the purpose of self build or custom build.
These registers will capture the demand site information that will then (in due course following the anticipated Housing and Planning Bill) link to the supply side requirements of local authorities to enable planning consents for plots for potential self builders.
For cohousing groups to are looking at self build or custom build this is a great opportunity to get the attention of the local authority and potentially site opportunities and planning consent in due course.
The Local Self Build Register is an independent platform that makes the process of registering an interest in self build easy and for local councils to gather names and information through the register. Register now and learn more here: http://localselfbuildregister.co.uk/
