The Cohousing Company is offering a unique opportunity for a UK based housing professional to join their team for a paid 6-month internship. The post is suitable for architects, urban designers, and housing professionals at any stage of their career, committed to immersing themselves in cohousing with a view to applying the processes and practices of cohousing in the UK upon their return. As an intern you will be working closely with world-leading architect and author Charles Durrett and his team on a range of projects alongside helping with office duties and communications. The internship programme has been running for several years although is the first time the internship has been offered to UK based applicants.


Charles Durrett is a world-leading architect and author with 40 years’ experience developing cohousing schemes across the USA. Charles coined the term “cohousing” following years of immersion alongside leading Danish architects in the 1980s where the concept originated. Over the last 30 years Charles has published extensively.


Charles supported activists to launch the cohousing movement in the UK during the 2000s where there are now 25 schemes and 60 more in the pipeline. Charles returned to the UK this year as keynote speaker at UK Cohousing Network’s Summit. Before returning home, he visited award-winning cohousing projects in New Barnet, LILAC, CHACO and Cannock Mill, offering talks, advice and support along the way.

The Cohousing Company is offering a rolling application process, please send a CV and covering letter expressing interest in learning about cohousing and proposing starting dates. There may be opportunities to live in a cohousing community or live independently in town. Applicants are recommended to have read and be familiar with Charles’s recent book Creating Cohousing: Building Sustainable Communities.
