We are a group of friends who want to age together, embracing our nerdy and geeky personalities, and providing neighbourliness (but not care) into our older years. We can’t prevent aging, but people in communities are less likely to suffer from loneliness and social isolation, and lead happier, more fulfilled lives. There are currently six members of our decision making group, called the First Steps, formed in January 2024. As the project grows we will take on more members.
Community – a co-housing project brought together through our shared love of geek culture.
Living for – between 20 to 30 independent dwellings somewhere urban but with shared green space and a shared communal building.
Aging – built to support independent living for as long as practical. No minimum age for members but focuses on the later stages of life.
Nerds – or geeks if you prefer. You don’t have to be a geek to live here but you do need to want to live with them.
Co-operative – we will be run by residents for the residents. We will need to do our part to make this work.
Inclusive – we are an inclusive space that values and celebrates difference, and is actively anti-discriminatory.
Affordability – including places to live for those in need, and built to keep running costs low.
Supportive – we will support each other to live our best lives – balancing our private and shared lives while being good neighbours.
Understanding – we know that we are all coming to our shared lives from different vantage points and experiences. We will listen, be honest, open, and accepting of the perspectives of others.
We don’t yet have a site, but we aim to find one in the M62/M1 corridor, east of the Pennines and north of Birmingham. We’ve put Yorkshire on the location as most of us live in or near Leeds, but we aren’t ruling out further afield.
We know these things take a long time but ideally within 4-10 years (before 2034). We want to form our community and live together before, as well as after, we retire.
We have not made full decisions about legal structures or house tenure yet but this represents our current thoughts. As it may be subject to change, join our mailing list to keep up to date by dropping us an email.
