Merry Hill

About

Merry Hill is a co-housing project in Bristol, born of a partnership between Bristol CLT and United Communities Housing Association (now called Brighter Places).  It comprises 50 homes in a mixture of half shared ownership and half affordable rent. It has therefore been developed entirely as a project of affordable homes supported with Homes England Finance.

The homes are built to Passivhaus standard, with ground source heat pumps, and the construction process was completed by a year of resident self-finish work in phases, during which prospective residents undertook second fix carpentry, kitchen fitting, tiling, painting and decorating and landscaping, earning ‘sweat equity’ in the process. The community has 32 single family houses and 18 flats.  Unfortunately our common house facilities were cut from the construction contract in order to make an already expensive scheme deliverable.  We are now in the process of trying to re-instate them with a second phase of construction.

The project took over ten years from inception to occupation and was occupied in over a year starting in spring 2022 and ending in May. 2023.  It already has an active residents association – Merry Hill RA – which organises events, co-ordinates proposals and develops common facilities and services.
