Info for planners and public agencies

This page contains a collection of articles targeted at planners wanting to know more about the cohousing model. Where an article has a named author (just below its title), it expresses the view of that author and is not necessarily the view of the UK Cohousing Network.

  • Living Greener, Cheaper, Friendlier: The Policy Case for Eco-clusters and Cohousing
SEND THIS TO YOUR LOCAL PLANNING AUTHORITY!
Most local planning authorities are currently preparing their new Local Development Framework: this is a set of policies which will shape planning permissions for many years to come. An LDF is required to address issues of sustainability as well as a wide range of other local needs, and local authorities will have a consultation period in which local organisations and individuals are invited to submit policy proposals for potential inclusion.
The Cohousing Network suggests that you use this opportunity to submit the following policy proposals: if adopted, they would make many cohousing projects dramatically easier to achieve. As well as submitting the paper to the local authority itself, this offers a good opportunity to make contact with your local elected councillors and seek their interest and support for this approach.
  • The Cohousing Approach to 'Lifetime Neighbourhoods'
An article considering how local authorities can work with public and private sector partners to develop a co-housing approach to the outcomes sought from the government's national strategy on housing for an ageing society. The article offers recommendations for action as well as a look at some of the key aspects of cohousing.
